Parish Feast Celebration in Saint Sophia Church (Waterloo) Sept 20, 2009
On Sunday, September 20th, 2009 Saint Sophia Church in Waterloo celebrated its parish feast. Our children together with Mrs. Claudia Griebenow, Parish Council President and Sunday school teacher, greeted His Eminence, Archbishop Yurij with bread and salt, according to our ancient tradition. Archbishop Yurij headed the service during which two memorable events for our Parish took place. Before the Liturgy three worthy men, John Jaworsky, Pavel Bahdanovich and Andre Hladio were tonsured to the rank of reader. Also, during the Small Entrance at the Liturgy our priest, Rev. Fr. Myroslav Shmyhelskyy was presented with his first ecclesial award – Nabedrenik. After the Liturgy, Panakhyda was served to commemorate the 300th Anniversary of the death of hetman Ivan Mazepa.
The festivities continued in the Church Hall – a dinner cooked by our ladies and gentlemen did not disappoint anyone!
Sincere gratitude is expressed to everyone who was involved in organization of our “Hram” Celebration as well as to our guests from Toronto, London, Oshawa, and Bradford.

Trips to Orthodox Monasteries
In our world full of vanity everybody at a certain point needs a break. Parishioners of Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Waterloo, ON as well as their brethren in Christ from Waterford, ON have a unique opportunity to find refuge from daily routine and to get closer to eternal matters during the regular visits to Orthodox Monasteries, organized by their pastor, Fr. Myroslav Shmyhelskyy.
Both St Kosmas Greek Orthodox Monastery in Bolton and Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Milton are situated in picturesque woods “far from the madding crowd”. However, they welcome everybody who wants to find out more about monastic life, to pray, to venerate Holy Relics.
St. Kosmas Greek Orthodox Monastery in Bolton
Every time our group get back home from a trip to the monastery they might be tired, but their eyes sparkle, their hearts are filled with joy. Whatever awaits them next, they rest assured in Lord’s majesty and omnipotence and nothing else matters.
